Helpful tips for starting and maintaining a charcoal fire

Lighting and maintaining charcoal can be a challenge for some, but with a few simple techniques, you can quickly achieve the perfect temperature and a steady fire for cooking. Here are some helpful tips for easily starting and maintaining a fire:

1. Use eco lighters, not liquid spirits

  • The best way to light the coal is with natural kindling - wool cubes, paper or even small dry twigs. Avoid liquid lighter spirits as they can impart an unpleasant flavor to the food and create more smoke.

2. Try a kindling chimney

  • One of the quickest and easiest ways to start a fire is with a coal chimney. Just fill the chimney with coal, put some kindling under it and light it. The chimney creates a draft that helps the coal ignite evenly and quickly.

3. Wait for the coals to turn gray-white before starting cooking

  • When the coals are fully lit, they change color to gray or white on top, which means they have reached the optimal cooking temperature and are ready to use.

4. Control the amount of coal for different temperatures

  • If you want a high fire for quick roasting, use more coals and spread them evenly. For slower cooking or smoking, reduce the amount of coals and arrange them at one end of the grill, creating zones of different temperatures.

5. Monitor air and oxygen flow

  • To maintain a stable temperature, adjust the air flow. Open and close the vents on the grill or barbecue to increase or decrease the oxygen that aids combustion.

6. Add coals during cooking if necessary

  • If you cook for a long time, the coals may start to burn. Keep the fire burning by adding more coals, but only when the already lit ones begin to lose heat. It is recommended to add small amounts to maintain a constant temperature.

7. Use the barbecue lid to control the temperature

  • The lid helps maintain a constant heat and reduces the need to add extra coals. For long roasting or smoking, keep the lid closed and the vents slightly open to create a steady temperature.

With these tips, you can easily light and maintain charcoal to enjoy quality cooking and unique food taste.
